Available from Windows 7, BitLocker is a built-in feature of Microsoft on Windows that helps users encrypt partitions on the hard drive to protect data. And this feature works on both portable and USB drives. Simple to use as follows.
Step 1: Plug the USB into the computer and open File Explorer. Right-click the USB name and select Turn BitLocker on.
Step 2: The BitLocker Drive Encryption dialog box appears.
Please check the option “Use a password to unlock the drive” and enter the password you want to set to protect the USB into the two boxes below and click Next.
Step 3: In the next custom window, Windows will give you 3 options to backup the password reset key set above. Includes archiving to Microsoft accounts, saving to a file and printing. Depending on preferences, you can choose 1 of 3.
For each option, Windows will proceed to export the corresponding recovery key. Once you have selected it, click Next to continue.
Step 4: In the next window, keep the default options and click Next.
Next, check the “Compatible mode” option because this is the option for portable storage devices such as USB or external hard drives.
Finally, Windows will confirm the operation you are performing again. If confirmed, click Start encrypting to start the process.
The process of data encryption begins. Depending on how much data is available, the encryption time will be long or fast. And now USB will be protected by the Password you have set up.
When plugging the USB into another computer, the window asking for the password will appear. If you enter it correctly, you will be able to retrieve the data stored inside, otherwise it will be the opposite.
How to turn off the BitLocker feature
If you want to turn off the BitLocker feature for USB on Windows 10, do the following.
Step 1: Plug the USB into the computer you use to enable BitLocker for USB, right-click USB and select Manage BitLocker.
Step 2: The BitLocker Drive Encryption window appears, click the Turn off BitLocker option on the USB partition name on the computer.
Step 3: The confirmation dialog appears, click Turn off BitLocker to confirm.
The decryption process will start. And when done, you can use USB as usual without having to enter a password.
